Patong, Karon, and Kata

A short ride away, on a sawngthaew (basically the back of a truck), took me to some of Phuket’s gorgeous beaches. With pillowy white sand and turquoise blue water this would be a wonderful place to relax and lie on the beach. Unfortunately, and this goes primarily for Patong, five uninterrupted minutes without someone offering you an umbrella, drink, towel, tuk-tuk, massage, t-shirt, coconut, etc. don’t exist. Countless umbrellas line the beach and the areas overdevelopment and commercialization reminded me of everything I hated about Bali. In spite of the tsunami that devastated these beaches a year ago, everything has been rebuilt in its absolutely disgusting glory allowing the streets to once again be filled with the most obnoxious of tourists. What a waste of a day.
