March of the Penguins

An hour south of Melbourne sits Phillip Island, home of the daily Penguin Parade. Every sunset, the world smallest penguins (the 6-8 inch tall fairy penguin) emerge from the ocean and march across the beach to their little sand dune burrows. This is how I spent my Christmas Eve with my family in Melbourne, watching these cute silly little penguins come ashore and march home. They are hilarious to watch, because if one penguin sees danger flying overhead, he'll scurry back into the ocean and the entire group of hundreds of penguins will follow in a clumsy mess. The stadium seating takes a little away from the experience, but this is definitely worth doing if you're ever in Melbourne, the Penguin Plus or Penguin Premium packages get you out of the stadium seating and much closer to the pengiuns. Unfortunately photography wasn't allowed, but I snuck a couple of pictures without flash anyway, sorry about the quality.
